Sometimes the excitement that you’re going to bring a puppy home can make you over look the fact that you actually have to do a bit of preparation before the big day arrives. Your home is going to become the puppy’s home too, so you need to make sure you have everything that you puppy needs to feel at home. This includes:
- Somewhere he can call his own - Whether this is a plastic bed or a wire crate, it is important that you give your puppy a place in the house that is just his where he feels safe and warm.
- Food and water bowls - Yep, your puppy is going to have to eat and drink and he’ll need something to do that from. A metal dish with a rubber grip on the base is great for a food bowl. It can be easily cleaned, your Miniature Schnauzer puppy wont chew it to bits, and he be able to push it round the flow as he tries to eat. Similarly, a ceramic bowl is a good option, heavy and easy to clean.
- Food - Don’t forget to get some puppy specific food to put into that food bowl!
- A lot of newspaper - Many breeders ‘paper train’ puppies before they leave their care. This means you should have a good supply of newspaper for your pup. As you begin to properly toilet train the need for newspaper will be reduced until your puppy wont need it at all.
- Clothes and disinfectant - Accidents will happen. You puppy is the baby of the dog world and sometimes he can’t make it to the newspaper you have for him. So be prepared to clean up any mess he might make. It’s best to get a mild disinfectant as your dog will be sniffing around the floor you’ve just cleaned.
- Tidy away anything you don’t want chewed - Puppy’s are chewing machines. They will happily try to eat their way through your house if you let them. To counter this, tidy away anything that you don’t want chewed, and make sure your puppy has a lot of toys that he can chew on.
Here’s some photo’s of our preparations for Bernard:
Bernard’s Den
We’ve decided to get Bernard a crate as it will give him a real place to call his own and somewhere he can be safe from little hands that might try to grab him!
Bernard’s Bowls
An easy to clean metal food bowl and a nice traditional ceramic water bowl.
No Surprises in our Shoes
We’ve put all our shoes in this rack. Not only done it make our house generally tidier but hopefully it also means we wont put a pair on one day to find Bernard’s left a surprise for us in there.
Very Chewable Wires
We’ve still got some work to do. I’m sure these wires will look mighty tasty to Bernard but I think it’s fair to say he’ll be better off if he doesn’t try them.
